Did you know that every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event? According to the January press released from CDC, Center for Disease Control & Prevention, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in America, which is why Congress, by Joint Resolution approved in 1963, has requested that the President issue an annual proclamation designating February as “American Heart Month”. There are a number of risk factors associated with heart disease; high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, and even secondhand smoke. According to the CDC there are daily food choices we can make to live a heart healthy lifestyle: choose lean meats and poultry, select fat-free, 1% fat and low-fat dairy products, reduce trans fat, aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day, cut back on food & beverages with added sugars, and choose and prepare food with little or no salt to name a few.
