Bright Green

One of the things I’m working on is trying to be a responsible dweller on this planet by minimizing waste and taking some steps to live “more green”.  Some of the things we’ve done so far – switched to CFL’s, eliminated paper napkins (use cloth), cut back on paper towels (use rags), and bring reusable bags to the grocery store.  We purchase some organic foods & try and use our aluminum water bottles too, although these choices were initially driven by health concerns vs. environmental impact.  Anyway, Safeway introduced a line of environmentally friendly home care products called “Bright Green” (cleaning, laundry, light bulbs, and paper goods) that’s made me stop and think more broadly about what I use and how it impacts our earth (there is a lot I need to learn!).  As I’m running out of my regular products I’ve starting purchasing Bright Green replacements – dishwasher detergent, dish soap, paper towels, and laundry detergent – they work great!

I am happy to see Safeway carrying products labeled as green, but in my store I've seen a reduction of products on the shelf that I choose because they are green. For example, Star Olive Oil in the 3 litre tin. The container is completely recyclable and because we use a lot of olive oil the size is great. In addition the tin container is the best way to keep light out and retain the healthy nature of the oil. I have had to travel further and pay more at speciality stores to get the kind of products that I used to find on the shelf at Safeway. Makes me sad.

Hi James,

We do carry the item your referring to in the Denver, Portland and Seattle areas as well as through our Vons division. If you're near one of these warehouses we can request a case be sent to your local store. If your outside of these areas we can still have a case sent to your area's store by the manufacturer. You can request this by calling our contact number at 1-877-723-3929. Thanks for the inquiry!

Awesome. I will have to give Safeway another try. I usually shop Rainbow Grocery or Whole Foods Market because I find having to read all the labels at Safeway exhausting (I'm less familiar with the brands, so often find myself unpacking something like "natural" vegetable stock with hydrogenated soybean oil). Thanks for the tip! I hope the new line of green cleaning products is a success.

I love that Safeway is helping us find greener options in our cleaning products. I've been experimenting with several grocery store "green" lines and am finding that the fragrances are still a problem for me. I purchased the Bright Green dishwashing liquid with the "natural citrus scent" at Safeway a few days ago. It's too perfume-y for me and I'm not picking up on the "citrus" at all. I'm wondering (as I'm reading the list of ingredients on the bottle) what "natural citrus perfume" is. Can anyone tell me?

I tried Bright Green dishwasher detergent because I wanted detergent that didn't ad to more pollution of rivers and lakes etc. Bright Green was the only brand that didn't leave a nasty scum film on my dishes. I forgot where I had purchased it so I bought like six other brands of bio dishwashing detergents and couldn't use them. So now I know that safely carries this brand I will come back!

by ‎11-30-2009 10:52 AM - edited ‎11-30-2009 10:55 AM

Shelby,

Wow! Six different detergent brands-- that's a lot of trial and error!  I'm so glad you were finally able to reconnect with Safeway's Bright Green product line!  :-)

by bj40(anon) on ‎12-19-2009 01:36 PM

I thought the citrus was great--my kitchen smelled so nice when the sink was filling up and the dishes got clean--so it is my favorite for now!

by MyrahU(anon) on ‎02-01-2010 05:33 PM

Why has my local Safeway stopped carrying Bright Green dishwashing liquid?  Is there a way I can request a couple of bottles?

by on ‎02-02-2010 12:37 PM

Hi Myrah, can you tell me where your exact Safeway store location is? The Bright Green dishwashing liquid should be available but once I know which store you're shopping at I can fulfill your request! Thanks ;-)

by MyrahU(anon) on ‎02-04-2010 12:14 PM

The one I shop at is the Safeway in Sunnyvale at 639 South Bernardo Avenue.

I'm returning my Bright Green dishwasher detergent ASAP.  That junk doesn't work at all.  I just checked the dishes I ran through the hot cycle for the second time and they are still dirty.  What gives anyway??  We can no longer purchase cleaners with phosphates, and I'm all for that, but PLEASE give us a good cleaner to take its place.

I like Safeway's Bright Green Products for the most part, however i do have one complaint about the dishwashing soap.  There is no seal under the cap.  I'm not afraid of contaminants although that might be a separate issue.  My problem has been that TWICE...not once but TWICE my groceries have been bagged in such a way that the pop-up lid has come up and the soap has spilled all over my car.  The first time it happened i thought probably that particular bottle didn't get sealed.  I have used Seventh Generation for about a year now, but it's hard on my hands, so this time I bought Bright Green again for that reason, not thinking about the seal issue.  While unloading my car i had about a half a bottle spilled all over my back seat.  I can't get it all out no matter how i try so, now i'm going to have to spend money getting a car detail.  Needless to say...i'm not happy.  Ms BJ

I buy the Bright Green dishwashing liquid in the Woodinville, WA Safeway and love it. Lately though, it hasn't been on the shelf. I am wondering if they are going to stock it soon.

i just bought some Bright Green.  i noticed that there is no seal beneath the plastic cap.

i understand it's slightly more green to skip the seal but i'm not thrilled by that aspect of the product.

by Billy Bob(anon) on ‎12-16-2010 05:16 PM

i am confused about the pricing of these products.

the Bright Green auto dishwashing gel is a great value yet the BG Rinse Agent appears to be much more expensive than competing green rinse agent products?

Glad to hear you are reformulating the Bright Green dishwasher gel.  I've been disappointed with the current product, which leaves residue on glasses and plates and doesn't clean flatwear well.  Until the product is reformulated, I'll be using another product.

I purchased the Dishwashing Liquid in Lavender Scent and have found that not only does it not smell like lavender, its perfume-y scent fills my whole kitchen up with a not-found-in-nature odor. And that makes me question the validity of the "natural" claims on some other Bright Green products.

For now, I am going back to using Seventh Generation products – they know what lavender smells like.

We're sorry to hear that you're not enjoying our lavendar scented Bright Green dishwashing liquid. Thank you for the feedback. We'll let our Corporate Brands team know about your concerns.

I am a price watcher and as I drive around town, I am always looking for a deal. However watching Safeway gas prices, I can find cheaper gas at local gas stations than , I find at Safeway even with the rewards price, I pay more to buy Safeway gas ! why not make out money worth it to you Safeway by offering a lower price at the pump? also I find that the rewards price last a shorter time now! I spend lots of money at Safeway. thank you olemantoo

I would like to see truly unscented products (those which also do not include 'masking fragrance' ingredients) under the 'bright green' line.

My husband bought the liquid dish soap, thinking that since it is phosphate-free, perhaps my fingers would be spared from contact dermatitis. What happened was much worse, however - I nearly had an asthma attack from the chemicals that make up the "natural citrus scent"! I am still gagging and nauseated and all I did was squirt a tiny bit into running water. We're going to try to return the container of soap ASAP.

by on ‎04-29-2011 10:23 AM

Thank you for sharing your comments regarding our product Ztepf. Your comments will be sent to our Corporate Brands Department for further review and consideration. We encourage you to visit the Customer Service Desk in your local store with the product and receipt for further assistance.

I tried the Bright Green Dishwasher Gel recently, and I'm actually impressed. It's economical to use, and gives me clean sparkly dishes. I have very soft water, so I like the fact that I can use less for my dishwasher (I only need 1/3 of dispenser full for my water and machine), and not have the foaming problems I did with the pacs and tabs.

I liked it well enough that now I use the Bright Green facial tissues, paper towels, napkins, bathroom tissue, all purpose cleaner, and toilet bowl cleaner. Every one of them has been effective and prices are GREAT! Thank you for bringing an earth-friendly product line to market that's affordable and WORKS! :smileyhappy:

Thank you for your comment Mike. We are always pleased to hear such great feedback regarding our Bright Green products. :smileyhappy:

I purchased Bright Green Automatic Dishwasher Powder Detergent and I'm happy with how it works, but I will never buy it again because of the way it CLUMPS! I have have to shake it like mad in order to get any powder out. Very frustrating. I've purchased the liquid detergent and I'm hoping that will work better.

I, too, have purchased the bleach and was shocked that it didn't have a seal on the top. I learned about it first when I ended up with bleach all over the back of my car. Fortunately we have a rubber pad back there as we have a dog. I'm more careful when I purchase the bleach now.

Thank you

molly

Did the BG auto dish detergent (liquid) actually get reformulated or... what? Because I think I am going to just have to throw out the rest of the bottle, it does pretty much nothing for my dishes... I'm assuming it isn't the DW itself because Cascade did the trick... I just didn't want to use the chemicals from Cascade on dishes anymore, so I bought BG.

Hello, We've got a bottle of the lavender dish soap and am concerned that I don't see the ingredients listed on the package, or on a website. If they are available please direct me to the correct location. There are many reputable companies that do provide ingredient lists and I cannot use a product without knowing what it is that I am bringing into my home and exposing my family to. "Natural fragrance" can mean a lot of things, many of them not so natural and some of them downright toxic. Thank you, Skip

by on ‎06-27-2012 12:14 PM

Thanks for sharing your feedback, Joanne! Our research indicates that we do show sales of Bright Green Gel Auto Dish Wash at your local stores. If you were unable to locate this item, it is possible that either it was temporarily out of stock or not located where you were looking. Please speak with a manager about ordering this product back into your store along with the UPC (0-79893-20022) and order number (10 05715). We apologize if this in any way inconveniences you.

by on ‎06-27-2012 03:02 PM

We appreciate your interest, Skip. Please email us at safewaysocialmedia@safeway.com with some additional product details, so we may look into this further.

Hi, I have a question about the Bright Green dish washing liquid. What are the surfactants made from? Are they plant sources?
by on ‎08-10-2012 02:14 PM

Dave, can you let us know which Bright Green dishwashing liquid you’re referring to? If you have the UPC for the product, it would greatly aid in our efforts to provide an answer to your inquiry.

by on ‎08-23-2012 04:10 PM

Dave, we have received word from our Corporate Brands Team regarding your inquiry. Safeway Bright Green Dishwashing liquid is formulated with surfactants that are prepared from both plant and synthetic raw materials.  Due to natural seasonal variations in plant crops, some synthetic components must be used in order to assure that the product meets a consumer accepted performance level.  Plant derived surfactants are always used wherever possible.  These surfactants are carefully selected to provide the best combination of plant feed stocks, product performance and end product value.

Bright Green Products are awful!  I'm environmentally sensitive and I'm always looking for non-toxic cleaning products.  I bought a bottle of Bright Green Dish Soap.  It was a NIGHTMARE! There was a musky smell that barely hid the noxious smell.  The worst part was that it stuck to everything.  Plastic bowls absorbed the smell quickly as did my hands. I'm not sure what's in it but it belongs in a toxic waste dump. Never again!  Back to Biokleen, Planet or 7th Generation.

by on ‎08-30-2012 08:24 AM

Stillonline, we appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. We’ll be sure to forward your comments to our Consumer Brands Department for review. Have a great day!

I live in San Francisco, and buy from Safeway all the time, the one on Market St, 94114. I use Bright Green paper products all the time. However I am wondering on whether I should go with the laundry products as opposed to Ecos products. They completely publish their entire ingredients list. However, Bright Green products say natural this, natural that, however it has never listed every single chemical contained in the product. If there is such a list for the laundry detergent, please publish. My concern since I have sensitive skin is toxicity of the chemicals used followed by biodegradability and environmental impact. If all of them are satisfied I dont minding spending extra bucks at all.
