Can You Eat to Beat Breast Cancer?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Like many, I’ve had friends who have battled this disease. Although diet isn’t thought to be a major factor as it is with other cancers, there is evidence that leading a healthy lifestyle may offer some protection. Here’s what the latest research shows:

  • Being overweight likely increases risk. If you’re overweight, take steps to lose extra pounds. Even a small loss can make a difference. For most, losing weight means cutting back on calories and increasing physical activity. Try these tips: http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/HLA-200902

  • Physical activity may help reduce risk. Getting at least 30–and preferably 60– minutes of physical activity on most days is important for many health reasons, including cancer prevention. To get moving and fight a good cause at the same time, consider training for a run or walk that supports breast cancer research. I’ve done several 5K runs and a friend just completed a 3-day breast cancer walk–an amazing feat.

  • The role dietary fat may play is unclear.  Although some studies have suggested that a high fat diet may increase breast cancer risk, findings are mixed. Still, until researchers have a better understanding, it makes sense to keep fat intake to 20% to 35% of calories (about 44 to 78 grams of fat for a 2,000 calorie diet), as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Choose foods that contain unsaturated fats and limit those high in saturated fat and Trans fat in your diet.

I've been using a whole food supplement for 7 years now (only available through direct sales).  Before starting, I suffered painful, lumpy fibrocystic tissue.  After starting, pain gone, tissue smooth and mammograms clear - my body is now functioning in balance because the nutrients I am consuming are able to get into my cells and fuel my immune system.  Making good fresh food choices, getting lots of rest and water, regular exercise - all contribute to our overall good health.  Thanks to Safeway for helping all of us "Select" the best products out there to complete our daily health regime.
