Composting Flowers

Valentine’s Day has passed and maybe you received flowers as a gift. Flowers bring beauty and life to any location. They also represent thoughtfulness and giving.  It’s always nice to receive flowers from a loved one but what do you do with them afterwards? Please compost your symbols of love and affection! I recommend you place them in with your food or yard scrapes and allow them to re-join the circle of life again.  If you don’t have a compost bin at home, you can buy one online or pick one up at your local gardening store for a fairly nominal fee (depending on size and model) . While the flowers themselves will break down quickly, the stems and thorns will take a bit longer.

Valentine's is such a lovely holiday (get it?!) and it was so nice to hear how one could enjoy the spoils of that holiday and not feel bad about also 'spoiling' the environment.  Thank you once again for your wise words!  I love the whole idea of sustainability, and hope it lasts for ever.  Looking forward to your next post!!!  And I am sure I am not the only one who would love to hear more about Safeway's commitment to corporate social responsibility!
