When we were up at our friends’ cabin one of the moms made a few quick purchases at the local store which provided lots of entertainment for the kids. They were so simple and I wanted to share them as they might come in handy. The first one was an easy build to a regular activity for us – hiking/walking. The girls are pretty good walkers but definitely are less inclined to whine and will go greater distances if they have something else to keep them occupied – splashing in puddles, looking at animals at the zoo, etc. Amy’s add-on to the nature hike was to give the kids small bags to collect items of interest along the way (with some ground rules to maintain the environment). They were gone for nearly an hour collecting sticks, leaves, and such along their route and when they got back they were so proud to share their “collections” with us. The second idea is a great “craft” that the girls have done at school as well – making cereal necklaces. Simply tie a knot on one end of a shoelace, thread “O” shaped cereal until full, and then tie the two ends together. The last activity was molding and baking dough. One can of refrigerated pizza dough split across the kids, they molded it into whatever shapes they wanted (we had everything from a dinosaur to a heart), and then we put it in the oven to bake. They loved seeing what they made and eating their own personal creation with dinner! I’d love to hear more ideas for easy kids crafts/activities – please share!
