Every Bag Counts Food Drive

foodDrivegeneric.jpgDid you know that about 1 in 7 households are considered “food insecure”? That’s about 50 million people (including 17 million children) that “at times during the year, were uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food.” This is the highest level of food insecurity that we have seen in the U.S. since 1995 when the government first started measuring! Safeway and its stores want to help, so between July 6th and July 23rd, for just $10 you can purchase pre-filled bags of groceries in our stores and drop them in the food drive barrels as you exit. Such an easy way to make a difference this summer!

This is an incredible contribution; thanks so much for doing this. FYI I wrote about this drive on The Jolly Tomato, a kids' nutrition blog, here: http://bit.ly/q6XYYP

Jeanne, as one of the largest grocery retailers in North America, contributing to hunger relief programs is a natural fit for us. We’re proud to be one of the largest contributors to food banks and feeding programs in the communities we serve. In 2010, we donated more than $130 million in food product to hunger relief programs. In addition, many of our divisions contribute through their own signature programs to help fight hunger as it exists in their communities. Thank you for your kind words!

I have been reading a lot about the lack of good food and also a lack of grocery stores in many poor urban areas.
Is the old-fashioned food truck not a viable idea any more? I remember trucks that came by and delivered breads, milk, vegetables, etc..
Ice cream is still sold that way. Are we licensed and regulated to death?
Even carts. Is that too dangerous?
TV is showing us (restaurant) Food Trucks for the young people and they are so popular. Can large grocery chains not be encouraged to send out trucks?
You don't need to reply. I just wanted to put that out there.

AbuelaSue, thank you for your feedback. We'll pass along your suggestions to our Retail Operations department for review and future consideration.
