Healthy Snack

The girls (and I) love our treats now and then.  Finding the “specials” as they are called in our house, that taste like a treat yet don’t compromise our healthy eating guidelines can be tough.  One of the first things to go when we started being very careful about our food spending was the 100 calorie pack cookies that I would put in my weekday lunch.  For the past few months I substituted with an extra piece of fruit.  And while I know it’s healthier, I miss my treat! So, last week I found myself in the cookie aisle looking for a less expensive, better for you cookie option, and found it, sitting quietly on the bottom shelf – graham crackers!  Nothing fancy, but good all the same.  Also something I can give the girls in their lunches too since their schools are  “junk food free zones” which means no cookies, candy, chocolate in any form.  What are some of your favorite healthier treats?

I agree - graham crackers are a great treat!  Especially with peanut butter.  In fact, I really like anything with peanut butter.  One of my favorite healthy snacks is toast with PB and sliced banannas on top (and if I'm in an extra sweet mood, a bit of honey, too).  I also eat Fiber One cereal as a treat in non-fat yogurt, or grapefruit with brown sugar.

low fat or fat free vanilla yogurt with gronalo on top - so good! To add to the PB and toast with bananas, add just a drizzle of choc syrup on top to get the kids interested and hit the sweet tooth. Even rice cakes with PB or apples. My fav low cal/no fat chocolate dessert is choc fudge jello pudding, with a dallop of light or fat free whip cream, talk about hitting and satisfying the sweet tooth and not breaking the calorie bank. I'm getting hungry!
