Making Sense of Store Coupons

We’ve been hearing a lot about how everyone is using coupons to help manage their grocery budget and we’ve also seen that there are a lot of questions about how to use our Super Coupons.  So, I thought it might be helpful to go straight to the marketing team and ask them to put together a short “glossary” of the common terms you see on our Super Coupons.   Here’s a link http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Smart-Savings-Tips, I hope it helps!

I think it is wonderful that you have the time to help those of us who just would love to save the additional money but never find the time to truly understand the coupon strategy.  Variious websites do tell what coupons to put where but they sometimes use abbreviations which drive me crazy, I doni't know half the time what the abbreviation stands for.  So the glossery you have provided is so helpful.  Thanks for it.

You're very welcome and I'm glad you found the coupon "glossary" helpful :smileyhappy:

I love being able to add coupons to my Safeway card so that I don't have to carry them around. However, when the list is ready to be printed, could you ask the IT folks to have the coupons line up in "soonest to exprie" first and dates that are far away, last? My list covers > 1 page and if I forget to turn it over, I may not use a coupon before it expires.

Thanks :-)

I would like to know why the coupons in the weekly add are not downloaded to my Safeway card.  It would make sense in this recycle society that instead of having to clip those coupon and bring them in that we should be able to down load them like we do other specials.  Come on, if we are going to take the time to log on we should be able to get all the deals in one spot.  OR am I missing something? Is there a place to down load them?  Let me know.

Thanks

Hello Mary,

We do have digital coupons that you can load directly onto your club card. You can check them out here: http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Print-Coupons#iframetop

You will need register in order to successfully load the coupons onto your club card. If you don't know your Safeway Club Card number, you can call our Safeway customer support line at 877-723-3929, and they will help you out with that information.

Let me know if you have any other questions. :smileyhappy:

My local Safeway is making my shopping experience a headache. For some reason, my coupons are not always accepted. Yesterday, for instance, I used a coupon that offered $1.00 off the purchase of 14 cans of Friskies cat food. Loaded on my Just for U, is a personalized price of .39 a can. Am I not allowed to use a coupon on this? I read the coupon policy and didn't see this rule. The clerks at my local Safeway, make me feel like Im trying to steal something, or get away with something, while all Im trying to do is save money.

by on ‎03-21-2011 09:39 AM

Hi Judy! You can certainly stack a Personalized Price with a digital coupon as long as all of the requirements on the coupon are met. If you call our Customer Service Center at 877-723-3929, one of our associates would be happy to look into this issue in more detail for you.

I'm severely Lactose intolerant and trying to find lactose-reduced milk, yogurt and cheese?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

I have some technical comments on J4U that I would be SO happy to finally have addressed by your site tech guys:

1.  My "Club Specials" will NOT consistently load to my printable shopping list, no matter how many times I try or how long I wait.  Some do, some do not.  This week, for example, the Gala apples, Hansen’s organic juice boxes 4 pack, Simply Lemonades, Francisco Rolls, Sweet Onions, to name a few, would not print.  Others did add from the Club Specials, like the Russet potatoes, Romaine lettuce, whole white mushrooms, and a few others.  So instead, I had to print the list of my "Personalized Deals" and "Coupons" along with only SOME of my Club Specials that DID TAKE, and then I had to manually go back through and find the discrepancies from the advertised Club Specials, and then handwrite the Club Specials that weren’t added by the site.  All of this, after spending the time going through them online in the first place to print them all together.  Very frustrating.  Please fix this.

2.  I typically use my iPhone to look over the new deals when I get the J4U email.  The Coupons and Personalized Deals are so "hyper" on the screen that as I scroll through them, any little touch adds them to my saved deals.  Can we please see a "remove" option in both Coupons & Personalized Deals, as is the case with the Club Specials...you end up with a list a lot longer than you want and it's really frustrating, especially in the instance when they are stuck there for up to 3 months!

3.  I really don't like that I have to keep going to customer service for my personalized deals that "didn't take" at the register.  I know the minimum time it takes from loading to shopping so I know that is not the problem, in my case.  For instance, in the last week ALONE, I loaded the deals the night before but still had to get a price adjustment for a bakery item, a paper product, a produce item, and two other items.  This was just from last week...it's happened a lot more.  The J4U printing on the receipt therefore isn't as "helpful" if it doesn't show the item you were supposed to get and didn't.  That is why I bring my printed shopping list with me to "prove" it to customer service (who is always a delight to work with!  :smileyhappy:

4.  Overall, I don’t feel like the J4U is all that “personalized” in the personalized deals category.  Mostly, it just offers the same items I used to see in the ads anyway, but I didn’t purchase then either.  And I still don’t/won’t.  I can’t tell if Safeway is using this program to try and “push” certain products you think I want based on previous preferences in purchases, but it isn’t working as a suggestive tool.  I have no interest in them and won’t, even if their prices are better than “Wal-Mart”, as you site as a comparative source.  I’d rather you use my shopping history to offer me personalized deals…that makes more sense and would actually be appreciated.

:smileyhappy:

Thanks for allowing feedback!

I've been having this problem where sometimes, my J4U club specials loads on my computer, and other times, it says that J4U isn't available in my area. I don't understand why it only is available sometimes and not others.

Additionally, I've never been able to access the Personalized Deals aspect of J4U and I'm getting frustrated, feeling like I'm not being offered the same deals and discounts that other shoppers are around the country.

Anyone know anything about either of these issues?

by on ‎04-13-2011 09:23 AM

We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulty with this promotion. If the site is not displaying correctly or not allowing you to access the coupon center it may be an issue with your browser. Try deleting your cookies, temporary internet files, and browsing history, then close the page and re-launch your internet browser.  The personalized deals portion of Just for U is currently only available to our Northern California (including Hawaii) and Dominick’s divisions. If you live in one of these areas, and still can not access the personalized deals, or your issue with the page not being able persists please call our customer service center at 877-723-3929 and one of our associates would be happy to assist you.

Just curious when the "personal deals" section will be up and running.  I have registered my club card but everytime I go to that section it says that I have to wait 48 hours before things will load.

I just had my local Safeway tell me that you cannot use a store coupon (from the ad) and a manufacturer coupon on the same item.  They reference the Safeway coupon policy which says that two coupons cannot be used on the same item.  When did they stop allowing a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon?  I read the policy as saying that you can't use two manufacturer coupons on the same item.  Help!

by on ‎05-27-2011 12:05 PM

Marie, please contact us directly at safewaysocialmedia@safeway.com with your club card information. We'd be happy to look into this for you!

by Kat(anon) on ‎05-27-2011 03:52 PM

I am a beginner at trying to maximize my coupons with my grocery purchases. I have a friend who was explaining to me that I could upload coupons to my Safeway card and also use my clipped manufactured coupons at the register even if it's on the same product....? Is that true? Or, is it stealing?

Also, from above posts.... sounds like there is some difficulties when you upload coupons. Is it a common problem?

by on ‎05-31-2011 02:15 PM

Yota96, we do allow customers to use one store and one manufacturers coupon per item. We’d like to help. Can you contact us directly at safewaysocialmedia@safeway.com with some more details about your experience?

by on ‎05-31-2011 02:15 PM

Kat, you can register your club card at www.safeway.com and upload coupons from our Coupon Center. While we do allow the stacking of one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon per item, we do not allow the stacking of more than one manufacturer coupon per item. Please feel free to reach out to us directly at safewaysocialmedia@safeway.com with any additional questions.

by Basher(anon) on ‎06-01-2011 12:00 PM

When I log into Just for You and choose "Coupon Center" and load those to my Club Card, are those manufacturer coupons or store coupons?  Can I use a clipped paper manufacturer's coupon in addition to the electronic coupon loaded from J4U's Coupon Center?

by rymanz(anon) on ‎06-01-2011 09:31 PM

I am new to couponing.  I have a question about stacking.  As an example, I have 10 coupons on laundry soap for $3 off.  It is on sale for $3.99.  If I buy 10 bottles, can I use all ten coupons?  I don't know if this is considered stacking or not.  This is the policy that made me question this thinking.

21. Safeway does not allow a customer to redeem two or more manufacturer coupons against the same item in a single transaction.

Thank you for your time

by on ‎06-02-2011 09:27 PM

Basher, within the Coupon Center, digital coupons that are for Safeway branded items are considered store coupons. Digital coupons for national brands are considered manufacturer coupons and can not be stacked with paper manufacturer coupons. There is an occasional exception to this if the coupon for the national brand item is advertised as a "Super Coupon" in the weekly ad. In this case the coupon is a store coupon and may be stacked with a paper manufacturer coupon. Unfortunately at this time this additional label is not included in the listing within the Coupon Center. You may check for Super Coupons online by viewing the weekly ad at http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Weekly-Specials.

Personalized deals are indeed a separate price and coupon savings may be stacked on top of your personalized deal prices. These offers are designed "just for u" based on your shopping history and are personal sale prices that are guaranteed through the duration of the offer period.

by on ‎06-02-2011 09:28 PM

Rymanz, Safeway will accept multiples of the same coupon, provided you are purchasing the same number of items as the duplicate coupons you are redeeming. Per our ads, Store Managers do reserve the right to enforce the sales of retail quantities only. We hope this helps!

I'm so confused.  I've been trying to figure out what type of coupons (i.e., store or manufacturer) are the electronic coupons that you load onto the Safeway card? Can anyone help me with this?  I live in Hawaii if that makes any difference.
