Sixteen weeks into the year and I’m more or less staying on track. I think I’d give myself a B given the traction on my running and book these past two months. Training for the half marathon is going well (no injuries so far!) and with the race at the end of May I’m feeling good about where I am. Eating better? Not as much progress as I’d like, in fact some slippage given a stressful sleep deprived two week period when everyone was sick. My book, Eat Pray Love – I finished Italy and I’m now mid-way through India. Had I not had a bum overhead light on my return flight from Denver I would be well into the Indonesia chapter by now I’m sure. Interestingly the India chapter came in quite handy on our car ride home on Easter. We had brunch at a friend’s house so we pushed nap time a bit so the kids could play a little longer and we could have more time with our friends. Flexing nap time for Gabby is no big deal (yes she still naps at 6!), she’ll nod off easily and anywhere. But for the twins, they moved into the “crazy zone” and were getting themselves more and more amped up on the ride home (Gabby slept through all of this she was so tired). I remembered the mantra Liz first tried to use for meditation (Om na ma shivaya) and thought maybe I could quiet their minds if we started chanting (a complete misuse of the mantra I know but being captive in a car with kids drives some desperate measures!). I taught them the chant and they thought it was great fun to“sing” with mommy. We must have chanted for at least five minutes and it was just enough to break the cycle, thank goodness! What are some tricks you use to keep things sane when you’re on a car ride with kids?
