Sustainable Seafood Brochure

92i46F0440B4F7E87EDIf you enjoy seafood, then you may have questions about the fish and shellfish you buy, like how it is cultivated and harvested and how these activities impact our waterways. With ongoing media reports and a lot of desire to do what’s right for the planet, it’s often confusing and difficult to know HOW to make the right choices to support the right efforts.

We want to answer your questions and address these concerns, so the next time you’re in the seafood department pick up a copy of our “Always a Good Catch” brochure. It highlights what we’ve already done—like halting the sale of certain “Red List Species” like Blue Fin Tuna and all species of Shark—and our ongoing efforts to support seafood sustainability across all areas. From employee training and offering sustainable seafood choices, to assessing our vendor’s policies and practices regarding seafood, energy, water use, transportation and packaging, we’re doing our part to do what’s right for our oceans. What do you think of our Sustainable Seafood Policy? Let us know!

Thanks Safeway for making sustainable seafood a choice for consumers! I have participated in Monetery Bay Aquarium's Cooking for Solutions event through my winery for the past five years and continue to be dismayed and challenged by the problem of overfishing. It is a problem that needs consumer understanding and action, and I applaud Safeway for seeing this need on the one hand, and on the other, for making these choices available to those consumers who already are aware and care about this issue. THANK YOU SAFEWAY!

Veronica - This last JUNE, I emailed consumer services to find out why my Safeway store in Klamath Falls, Oregon quit stocking Safeway Select brand, water packed, Tongol Chunk Light Tuna. This was the only brand I would buy.  No broth added, low in sodium and great tasting.  I have bought this brand for several years.  The answer I received was this...."We have researched the Safeway Select Tongol Chunk Light Tuna and found currently, we do not stock this item at stores in your area.  However we are forwarding your request and comments to our buyers of Grocery products for their review and consideration."

I wrote back that I KNOW it is not being stocked but please telll my WHY it is not being stocked.  Why did it suddenly stop and will it be stocked again?????  Can you help me find out??  I have never received any further answer from anyone!

Thank you,

Longing for my old tuna,

Adrienne in Oregon

Adrienne, we apologize for any inconvenience, but after further research we were able to determine that the Tongol Chunk Light Tuna was discontinued due to supply issues. We have forwarded your comments to our Corporate Brands department for further review so they know what qualities you would like to see in our tuna products. We appreciate your feedback.
