Kids Birthday Celebrations

by Kate on 11-02-2009 07:48 AM

With our crazy lives we're always looking for easy ways to add mini-celebrations to our weekly routine.  It helps us bring in some fun so it doesn't seem like we're always working - at our jobs, school, the house, the yard (should I go on?), and it creates some great memories/traditions for the kids.  "Football Picnic Night" is one example.  We put down beach towels in the family room on Mondays and eat our dinner watching the game.  The girls love this as it "breaks" 2 rules - no eating in the family room and no TV/movies on school nights.  This week the celebration will be the twins' birthday - I still can't believe they're turning 4!  They'll get the VIP treatment all day - popsicles and sharing a birthday collage/poster (pictures of them from birth to 4 years) with their classmates, going out to dinner that evening (and wearing their fancy dresses), and then their birthday party on the weekend.  What do you do to celebrate your kids' birthdays?

Trick or Treat Experiment

by Kate on 10-29-2009 07:37 AM

Thanks to a tip I picked up on Safeway’s Facebook page, this year we’re going to experiment and mix our candy with pencils and stickers for the kids. Both of these items have achieved “accessory status” in our house – the colors, themes, characters, and sparkles that are available totally draw the girls in. In fact, a year or so ago, the twins used to put stickers on their faces as “make up” (no idea how they got that idea, they ended up looking like they had nicked themselves shaving). I’m not sure how it’s going to go over with the trick or treaters but it’s worth a try, there will still be plenty of candy out there! Have you ever given out treats other than candy?

BreastCancerTrials.org

by Kate on 10-28-2009 08:08 AM

Even though I have been at Safeway for a few years, I continue to discover more and more about the company that makes me proud to work here. By now I’m sure you all have seen the signs and tags in-store for the breast cancer fund raiser that is currently going on (Safeway has donated nearly $60 million over the past seven years to the cause!). But did you know that because of the generous contributions of customers like yourself and our employees, Safeway helped BreastCancerTrials.org become a nationwide program? This free service was developed by the University of California, San Francisco, the National Cancer Institute, and a group of patient advocates to give patients access to information about breast cancer research studies in the U.S., and the opportunity to identify the studies that may be a good fit. You can even sign up for alerts that will notify you when newly listed trials fit your situation. That is pretty amazing. If you, or someone you know, is at risk for breast cancer, has recently been diagnosed, is actively managing the disease, or has treated it and is now disease free, please have them check it out.

Caramel Apples

by Kate on 10-27-2009 07:52 AM - last edited on 10-27-2009 07:55 AM

We’ve created a new tradition at our home, merging our Midwest Sweetest Day upbringing and the Halloween season by making caramel apples. I remember doing this when I was a kid, fun to swirl, lots of leftover melted caramel for some extra fondue dipping, and there was always a lively discussion about “nuts or no nuts?” on the apples. It was a little trickier to manage with the girls than I remembered but still a lot of fun! You really have to move fast dipping the apples while the caramel is really warm as it starts to stiffen as soon as it begins to cool. Gabby could handle holding the apple and swirling but that part was a little awkward for the twins. What they all loved more than the dipping was the decorating. We got a little creative coating our dipped apples with crushed banana chips, sprinkles, and trail mix (Safeway Select has a great one with raisins, peanuts, almonds, chocolate candies and peanut butter chips). We left a couple of the caramel apples plain too. What Halloween traditions do you have?

We have a great sale on Halloween candy right now, prices good through Tuesday, October 27th. Buy any four bags of Hershey’s or Mars fun size candy and it’s just $2 a bag! I have to confess, Max and I use Halloween as an excuse to buy our favorite treats, since we rarely buy candy during the rest of the year (too tempting to keep in the house!). The fun size bars are perfect for portion control, one is just enough to satisfy a craving without putting you over your calorie count for the day. What are your favorite Halloween treats?

Have you signed up yet for the Safeway email program?  You’ll receive a weekly email giving you a heads up on weekly specials, promotions and coupons.  And as the holidays get closer you’ll also get information on recipes and leftovers, and planning and decorating tips too!  There were some great tips and tricks last year, like the turkey carving video – always good to have a refresher on that since we only do it once a year!  And the recipes to make the most of your holiday leftovers?  Yum!

Eating Right Turkey Bacon

by Kate on 10-22-2009 08:37 AM

I am constantly on the look out for ways to eat healthier. Sometimes this takes the shape of eliminating certain foods from our meals, but frankly, that only lasts so long until we just can’t stand it any longer and “give in”. I’ve found it much easier to find healthier options of the things we love and establish that as “regular” early on, then the girls have the healthier product as their reference point for how it should taste. Turkey bacon is our most recent example win. The girls have probably eaten bacon on a half dozen occasions over their short lifetime. We were craving pancakes one day so I decided to complete the meal with some turkey bacon. It was good and the girls loved it! And only 40 calories and 1 gram of fat per slice (0g saturated fat). This one just might become a “regular” on my weekly shopping list!

Getting Ready for Halloween!

by Kate on 10-21-2009 08:18 AM

The girls have been on me this year to get our house ready for Halloween. Some of our neighbors started putting their decorations up at the end of September, so in my kids’ eyes I’m “way behind”. I thought all was going to be ok when I finally hung our ghosts and spider outside only to find that some of our neighbors have decided to kick it up a notch and create elaborate scenes on their front yards – graveyards, ten foot inflatables – Halloween is starting to approach Christmas with all the outdoor decorations! For us though, simplicity drives everything so we’re going to stick with our ghosts, cobwebs, and spiders. Carved pumpkins too once we get to the pumpkin patch. What do you do for Halloween?

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

by Kate on 10-20-2009 08:11 AM

Have you seen this new item in the Bakery yet? They are delicious! I’ve been adding chocolate chips to my pumpkin bread for years, something about the warm spices and the chocolate just works for the fall. And honestly, what doesn’t taste better with a little chocolate! This cookie is soft, kind of muffin like, with plenty of chocolate chips. Baked fresh right in the store, they will be available through December. Give them a try and let me know what you think!

Dollar Deals!

by Kate on 10-19-2009 08:16 AM

There are some great deals in the ad this week, prices good through Tuesday the 20th. Beverages, breakfast sausage, rice & pasta side dishes, canned beans, and toothpaste, all for $1 or less! And did you catch the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese 48 hour sale this past weekend (5/$2)? I took advantage of that price to restock my pantry, a favorite comfort food for the girls now that the weather is cool and the rain has started. They love it topped with Romano cheese, sometimes we’ll add in steamed broccoli too. What creative twists and recipes using mac and cheese do you have?

Fall Cleaning and Nesting

by Kate on 10-15-2009 08:32 AM

There is something about fall that compels me to organize and take on those hardly seen cleaning areas in our house.  I think it’s the energizing cool air, coupled with the knowledge that I will soon be spending more time indoors that motivates me to take action.  This year it’s the photos of the girls and the dust bunnies that have collected under our furniture.  I had no idea the dust buildup was as bad as it was until I was laying on the floor with the girls watching football and happened to look under the couch, pretty frightening when you’re eye level!  The other project I’m committed to completing is hanging the photos of the girls.  Last Spring I purchased frames that will hold their last 3 years of school pictures but I still haven’t quite gotten around to putting the photos in the frames and hanging them on the wall!  I’m shooting to complete all by the end of the month – wish me luck!

Sweetest Day - October 17th

by Kate on 10-14-2009 09:13 AM

Growing up we seemed to have a few extra “holidays” that we celebrated in addition to the traditional ones.  Sweetest Day, the third Saturday of October, was one of those holidays.  As kids we thought of this as another Valentine’s Day and while we were told it was a legitimate holiday we half believed that my Dad invented such days so he had an excuse to buy “real candy” (translation; chocolate from a candy store that met his standards).  He had grown up working in his dad’s candy store making candy and ice cream so he had some definite ideas about what he considered quality ice cream and chocolate.  Anyway, this is one of those traditions we’ve decided to carry on with our girls and I realized there must be a little more history than I have retained from my childhood memories.  And indeed there is!  Depending on who’s account you believe it was founded in the early 1920s in Cleveland, Ohio by either a candy store employee  who wanted to bring cheer to those often forgotten so he started distributing candy and small gifts to children in orphanages and shut-ins, or a committee of 12 confectioners who developed the promotion to drive candy sales.  Over the years the meaning of the holiday expanded to an occasion to celebrate all the people who make your life special and the traditional gifts are similar to Valentine’s Day – candy, flowers, and chocolate.  Given its Ohio roots, it’s apparently a fairly regional holiday with the greatest observance in the Great Lakes Region. So while I may never know the “real story”, we will continue the tradition of celebrating the sweeties in our lives with a special chocolate treat.  Do you celebrate Sweetest Day?

Resolution #2 – Check!

by Kate on 10-13-2009 08:12 AM - last edited on 10-13-2009 08:13 AM

I am pleased to say that I checked off another New Year’s resolution this month, having run my second half marathon this year. It’s definitely getting easier; while I’m not necessarily running any faster I am recovering more quickly which I am thrilled about. And, I think I’ve finally figured out my “nutrition plan” pre, during, and post race which has made my runs more comfortable as well. Nothing is better than seeing the girls and Max cheer me on at the finish line and now that the twins understand that I’m not running away from them when they see me, I just need to cross the finish line and then we can all be together, the finish is getting easier too (there were many tears with my first race as we had forgotten to explain that beforehand, oops)! How are you doing on your resolutions?

FREE Pasta Instantly!

by Kate on 10-12-2009 09:59 AM

I wanted to make sure you saw this deal in the ad, good through Tuesday October 13th. Just purchase two jars of Classico pasta sauce (on sale at 2 for $4, 2 for $5 in Alaska and Hawaii) and get two FREE boxes of Barilla pasta instantly at checkout. Time to stock up!

We don’t drink much juice in our house, for the girls it’s primarily water and milk and for Gabby’s school lunches she’ll get a flavored water pouch. Fortunately the girls love their fruit so it’s not hard to get them to eat enough servings. But vegetables? That’s another story. Carrots will work one week, green beans the next. Currently broccoli is on the “don’t like it list” (whereas it’s been on the “approved list” for the past year). Talk about frustrating. So I continue to look for ways to incorporate veggies into our meals – chopped spinach in taco meat or spaghetti sauce for example. I picked up a new juice the other day that helps me out with this “stealth health” approach – Eating Right Kids 100% Fruit & Veggie Juice. It comes in two flavors, Strawberry Banana, and Pineapple Orange and contains a full serving each of fruit and vegetables in each box. Plus no added sugar or artificial sweeteners and 100% of the daily value of vitamin C! The girls loved it! The Looney Tune characters make them feel like they are getting something fun and I know that it’s good for them! Give it a try!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and through the generosity of our customers Safeway has raised over $60 million over the past seven years for medical research to improve the detection and treatment of breast cancer. $18 million dollars in 2008 alone! That’s impressive – thank you customers! The funds are distributed to leading cancer centers in North America, including the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The funding has also made possible a small fleet of mobile screening units which make these screening tests more accessible and affordable to more women in the states where Safeway operates and to underserved areas where women may not have immediate access to screenings. This year Safeway has three easy ways to support the cause – 1) $5 will be donated to support local and national breast cancer charities when you purchase $30 in participating products (look for the pink ribbon tag), 2) purchase a reusable shopping bag for $1.99 and $1 of the purchase price will be donated to the cause, or 3) donate at the check stand. Every contribution makes a difference!

Nuts as a Snack

by Kate on 10-06-2009 08:20 AM

After seeing the new sugar guidelines I decided to find a healthier substitute for my cereal bar snack. Something more beneficial nutritionally, equally satisfying from a taste standpoint, and with a similar cost per serving. No easy task. But after searching on our website I found a great article that inspired me to try nuts (“Nuts to You” under Healthy Living). That decision was then reinforced by the October issue of my Nutrition Action Health Letter (CSPI) which ran a feature on nuts. So for the past few weeks I’ve been eating an ounce (1/4 cup) of unsalted almonds or walnuts instead of a cereal bar as my snack. While the nuts are somewhat higher in calories per serving, they have zero sodium, very little sugar (1g), and they are higher in protein. Almonds and walnuts are also rich in unsaturated fats, the good fats that may help to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower blood cholesterol levels. Given the calories, portion control is key, so I measure into a snack bag, and bring them along with me to work. Very satisfying!

Have you become a fan of Safeway on Facebook yet? Well if the savings, online coupons, blog posts and discussions with fellow fans weren’t enough, we are now featuring Facebook exclusive offers too! Like the one last week for a one pound loaf of Safeway Select Artisan French Bread, just $0.25 cents with a coupon that you could get only on Facebook! The bread was amazing, we warmed it up and ate it plain, no spreads of any kind and it was delicious! And, did you know that it’s baked from scratch in our stores every day? No wonder it tastes so fresh!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

by Kate on 10-01-2009 08:25 AM - last edited on 10-01-2009 08:26 AM

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and this year it really strikes a chord as I know three women who were diagnosed this past summer. All in various stages and treatments and fortunately all have very good prognoses. But come on, 3 in one summer? In my mind cancer is a disease that strikes older people, which, with my own advancing age (and denial), I have now defined as 70+. Naïve I know. And while the median age of diagnosis is 61, 25% of women with breast cancer are younger than 50! And up until this summer I would have found this stat surprising: 1 in 8 women will develop Breast Cancer in the U.S. over the course of their lives, about 13%. The good news is that mortality rates are declining. So what can you do when age and genetics are risk factors? According to the Mayo Clinic; limit alcohol, maintain a healthy weight, stay physically active, and consider limiting the amount of fat in your diet. And importantly, increase your chances of early detection by getting an annual mammogram and clinical breast exam if you’re 40 years of age or older.

Football Season & Chicken Wing Dip

by Kate on 09-29-2009 07:47 AM

One of my favorite indulgences during football season is buffalo chicken wings dipped in blue cheese dressing – fabulously delicious but messy. Since we only eat them 3-4 times a year I’ve never bothered trying to make them from scratch, we just go to our local place and order take out. And then my friend Karen made her chicken wing dip for a BBQ. Wow, talk about an outstanding dip! It tasted exactly like Buffalo wings but without the mess! The recipe is simple; it was passed to Karen by a friend so I’m not sure where it ultimately originated. You can find many variations on the web that include other types of dressings/cheese but I prefer sticking to the original ingredients. Here it is – mix in a bowl; 1¼ pounds chopped chicken (use leftover grilled chicken or cut from a rotisserie chicken, canned chicken can work too), and ½ cup of your favorite buffalo wing sauce until the chicken is coated. Then add in one 8oz package softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup blue cheese dressing (I used lite), and 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese. Stir together, place in an oven or microwave safe bowl and heat until warm. Serve with celery sticks, pretzels and/or wheat crackers – be careful it’s addicting!

Signature Cafe Organic Soups!

by Kate on 09-24-2009 08:51 AM

With fall comes the return to meals with those wonderfully warm comfort foods – like hearty soups. And just in time for fall, Safeway’s Signature Cafe brand (found in the deli/prepared meal section) has introduced an organic line with three items – Chicken Noodle, Creamy Garden Tomato, and Southwestern Style Bean. We picked up the Organic Southwestern Style Bean variety and gave it a try. I added a 14oz can of reduced sodium chicken broth to the soup to stretch it for five, and served it with cheese quesadillas for the girls and a side salad for Max and me. The flavor was really fresh and there’s an authentic spicy kick too. The girls enjoyed it as well, although it was a little spicy for the twins so I added some cheese and a dollop of light sour cream to cut the heat a bit. Give them a try and let me know what you think!

Next Book Please

by Kate on 09-23-2009 08:13 AM - last edited on 09-25-2009 01:28 PM

I am thrilled to tell you that I have finally, after nearly a year, finished my book (Eat Pray Love)!  If you’ve been reading this blog (thank you!) you know that I set up this deceivingly easy goal as one of my New Years resolutions.  I should also mention that the time it took to read it had nothing to do with the quality of the book and everything to do with our crazy life.  I will try not to get too carried away by this small feat but I am hopeful that it’s a sign of things to come – a more balanced life?!  Dare I dream or did I just jinx this possibility by saying it out loud?  So now that I’ve exercised my reading muscle again, I’m ready to take on another book - any suggestions? I have a lot of catching up to do!

Friday night has become pizza night in our house. By the end of the week I’m out of meal ideas, low on energy, and running even lower on fresh items so making pizza is an easy way to transform those last small containers of leftovers into a new meal that the kids enjoy. We’ve started keeping refrigerated pizza dough on hand and always have plenty of cheese and pasta sauce so it really is low effort. And the girls love to help put it together too. This past week we had an additional “helper”, the mascot from Gabby’s class. Gabby came home with a school project; photograph and write about her weekend adventures with the class mascot (Fireworks the Red Snake). The following Monday she shared the story with her class and each week, someone else will get a turn adding their adventures to the book until it’s full. We had a lot of fun with this, snapping photos throughout our weekend and incorporating Fireworks into all of our activities. What are some of the creative school projects you’ve done with your kids?

Ok, I’ll admit the name is a mouthful but there’s a lot going on in the cleaning aisle over the next week or so. There’s a new promotion called “Clean it Like You Mean it” featuring over 100 items in the cleaning aisle from brands like Clorox, Swiffer, Hefty, Febreze and Lysol. Participating items are being offered on a “buy one get one free” deal AND you choose the items to mix and match (look for the special tag). The promotion runs through September 29th. I’ve put garbage bags, air fresheners, and disinfecting wipes on my list. With cold and flu season coming up I’m going to be even more vigilant about cleaning the surfaces in our home and car – kids toys, telephones, and door knobs/handles. I probably should bring some disinfecting wipes to the office as well.
