Wine Sale!

by Kate on 11-17-2009 11:01 AM - last edited on 11-17-2009 11:16 AM

With the holidays come many get togethers with our friends. It seems like we are always going somewhere for an open house or dinner. We like to arrive with something in hand so we often bring a bottle of wine as a hostess gift. I stock up a few times a year on wine to make sure we have enough in the house for such occasions. The great thing about this time of year is Safeway's wine sale - 30% off bottles that are $20 or more (excludes champagne and sparkling wine). And, if you buy 6 or more bottles (at any price) you get another 10% off - that's a 40% discount on some great wines! What I love about this is it gives me the chance to buy & give wines that are typically outside of my price range. I love great deals like that!

This year we find ourselves going to a friend's house again for Thanksgiving. I have to confess, while I miss the leftovers and I kind of miss putting everything together, I also love not spending the entire day in the kitchen. There are three families getting together and I've been assigned "non-traditional" stuffing (has some added ingredients beyond bread), Brussels sprouts, and pumpkin pie. Pretty straight forward but of course I'm doing a lot of research to look for recipes with a "twist" that sound like they taste great. I already have a favorite Brussels sprouts recipe (this one has been known to convert sprout non-eaters), and I found a pumpkin pecan pie recipe that I want to try. The one that I need help with is the stuffing - there are so many variations out there! The sausage and artichoke recipe on the Safeway website sounds awesome - what are the "secret ingredients" in your favorite stuffing?

For those in a grocery delivery service area, Safeway.com has a fabulous offer this Thanksgiving. Place a $200 or higher order on our website and receive free delivery and a free turkey. Simply order your groceries, include a Safeway turkey (value up to $7), and enter two promotion codes at checkout (“SMART” and “FREEBIRD”) to take advantage of this offer.

See the website for offer details. http://shop.safeway.com/superstore/default.asp?brandid=1&page=corphome

Kids Birthday Celebrations

by Kate on 11-02-2009 07:48 AM

With our crazy lives we're always looking for easy ways to add mini-celebrations to our weekly routine.  It helps us bring in some fun so it doesn't seem like we're always working - at our jobs, school, the house, the yard (should I go on?), and it creates some great memories/traditions for the kids.  "Football Picnic Night" is one example.  We put down beach towels in the family room on Mondays and eat our dinner watching the game.  The girls love this as it "breaks" 2 rules - no eating in the family room and no TV/movies on school nights.  This week the celebration will be the twins' birthday - I still can't believe they're turning 4!  They'll get the VIP treatment all day - popsicles and sharing a birthday collage/poster (pictures of them from birth to 4 years) with their classmates, going out to dinner that evening (and wearing their fancy dresses), and then their birthday party on the weekend.  What do you do to celebrate your kids' birthdays?

Getting Ready for Halloween!

by Kate on 10-21-2009 08:18 AM

The girls have been on me this year to get our house ready for Halloween. Some of our neighbors started putting their decorations up at the end of September, so in my kids’ eyes I’m “way behind”. I thought all was going to be ok when I finally hung our ghosts and spider outside only to find that some of our neighbors have decided to kick it up a notch and create elaborate scenes on their front yards – graveyards, ten foot inflatables – Halloween is starting to approach Christmas with all the outdoor decorations! For us though, simplicity drives everything so we’re going to stick with our ghosts, cobwebs, and spiders. Carved pumpkins too once we get to the pumpkin patch. What do you do for Halloween?

Fall Cleaning and Nesting

by Kate on 10-15-2009 08:32 AM

There is something about fall that compels me to organize and take on those hardly seen cleaning areas in our house.  I think it’s the energizing cool air, coupled with the knowledge that I will soon be spending more time indoors that motivates me to take action.  This year it’s the photos of the girls and the dust bunnies that have collected under our furniture.  I had no idea the dust buildup was as bad as it was until I was laying on the floor with the girls watching football and happened to look under the couch, pretty frightening when you’re eye level!  The other project I’m committed to completing is hanging the photos of the girls.  Last Spring I purchased frames that will hold their last 3 years of school pictures but I still haven’t quite gotten around to putting the photos in the frames and hanging them on the wall!  I’m shooting to complete all by the end of the month – wish me luck!

Sweetest Day - October 17th

by Kate on 10-14-2009 09:13 AM

Growing up we seemed to have a few extra “holidays” that we celebrated in addition to the traditional ones.  Sweetest Day, the third Saturday of October, was one of those holidays.  As kids we thought of this as another Valentine’s Day and while we were told it was a legitimate holiday we half believed that my Dad invented such days so he had an excuse to buy “real candy” (translation; chocolate from a candy store that met his standards).  He had grown up working in his dad’s candy store making candy and ice cream so he had some definite ideas about what he considered quality ice cream and chocolate.  Anyway, this is one of those traditions we’ve decided to carry on with our girls and I realized there must be a little more history than I have retained from my childhood memories.  And indeed there is!  Depending on who’s account you believe it was founded in the early 1920s in Cleveland, Ohio by either a candy store employee  who wanted to bring cheer to those often forgotten so he started distributing candy and small gifts to children in orphanages and shut-ins, or a committee of 12 confectioners who developed the promotion to drive candy sales.  Over the years the meaning of the holiday expanded to an occasion to celebrate all the people who make your life special and the traditional gifts are similar to Valentine’s Day – candy, flowers, and chocolate.  Given its Ohio roots, it’s apparently a fairly regional holiday with the greatest observance in the Great Lakes Region. So while I may never know the “real story”, we will continue the tradition of celebrating the sweeties in our lives with a special chocolate treat.  Do you celebrate Sweetest Day?

Resolution #2 – Check!

by Kate on 10-13-2009 08:12 AM - last edited on 10-13-2009 08:13 AM

I am pleased to say that I checked off another New Year’s resolution this month, having run my second half marathon this year. It’s definitely getting easier; while I’m not necessarily running any faster I am recovering more quickly which I am thrilled about. And, I think I’ve finally figured out my “nutrition plan” pre, during, and post race which has made my runs more comfortable as well. Nothing is better than seeing the girls and Max cheer me on at the finish line and now that the twins understand that I’m not running away from them when they see me, I just need to cross the finish line and then we can all be together, the finish is getting easier too (there were many tears with my first race as we had forgotten to explain that beforehand, oops)! How are you doing on your resolutions?

Power Pump Rewards Expiration 9/12/09

by Kate on 09-08-2009 09:10 AM

I wanted to make sure you were all aware that the fuel discounts you have accumulated will expire on Saturday, September 12th – so don’t forget to get to your Safeway fuel station to redeem your rewards at the pump! And, in an effort to provide even more value inside of our stores there will be some changes to the ongoing program effective September 13th - keep an eye out for the details in your area.

Well, I know I’ll be able to check at least one item off my resolution list this year – running two half marathons. In fact, I’ll actually do three this year assuming my legs hold up! Hmmm, does that give me a pass on some of my other resolutions :smileyhappy: ? To be clear, I wasn’t intending on running two halfs within two weeks of each other, I’m not that ambitious. I had signed up for one the first week of October and then learned that Safeway was sponsoring the Nike Women’s Half/Full Marathon in mid October so I entered that one as well, I thought it would be fun to run with some workmates as part of a team. My goal is to finish both events and be injury free when I’m through – no record breaking time for me. I’ve been extra diligent about doing some focused stretching after each run and I’ve spent some time icing after the long runs as well given my history of shin splints. I’m going to start doing some research on nutrition to aid my performance as well – any tips please share!

Have you seen the yellow school bus tags in the store? They are on items that are participating in the Safeway 10% Goes Back to Schools promotion. This program has donated over $11 million dollars to local schools over the past four years it’s been running! The promotion started August 12th and ends September 15th. Ten percent of the sales from participating items will be donated to the school of your choice when you purchase them with your Club Card. The top 200 earning schools will also get a $1,000 bonus! Look for details on the bottom of your receipt or find additional details on our website at http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/BackToSchool2009. At the end of the promotion bring your shopping/redemption receipt to your school to donate your earnings. Tell your friends and family to participate too – schools need our help!

County Fair Fun

by Kate on 07-29-2009 09:02 AM

This is County Fair season; the fairgrounds are only a couple of miles from our house so it’s become an annual event for us. My mom and sister were in town for a few days so we took the kids on a weekday to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the “Kids Free Fridays” promotion. We had a blast, and everyone enjoyed the rides (even Nana – what a trooper!). The girls love the fair – the rides, the crafts, the games, and the animals. The girls made sunflowers out of paper plates, colored & painted on easels, and enjoyed watching the baby animals. We spent most of our time in the “kiddie area”, Gabby and Maddy are the thrill seekers, Mae prefers slow and steady rides with absolutely no spinning (clearly my genes at work for Mae, although I loved riding the kiddie roller coaster with Gabby). We limit the games to keep costs manageable, but I do give the promoters credit, the kids always leave with some small toy – and they were very flexible in negotiating 3 smaller versions for a larger one so everyone walked away with something. Apparently attendance was up this year too, over 432,000 attendees, who consumed nearly 89 thousand corn dogs and 27 thousand funnel cakes (someone should consider setting up an antacid booth next year). I know we accounted for 4 of those corn dogs (Max and the girls, I’m not a huge fan). What summer traditions do you enjoy with your family?

Safeway was featured on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight last week.  ABC ran two short segments on the work our CEO is doing to help employees improve their health and reduce Safeway’s health care costs.   And it’s working!  While I enjoyed seeing my company making national news what really inspired me was the personal story of one of our employees Jo.  I literally got choked up listening to her describe the emotional impact of being overweight as a woman, and her mind set shift from “how do I look” to “what are the long-term impacts on my health”.  She lost 40 pounds and is happier and healthier because of it!   Great job Jo!

Summer Activities - Backyard Campout

by Kate on 07-13-2009 09:28 AM

The girls got such a kick out of sleeping in the tent in our backyard. We were prepared for the worst - whining, multiple trips to the house, never getting to sleep but I am happy (and relieved) to report that none of that materialized. We stacked the deck a bit letting them stay up until it was dark so they were good and tired. We lucked out too as it was a little cooler that evening. The combination of fuzzy pajamas and light weight princess sleeping bags created a festive atmosphere for the girls. I think the thing they liked best of all was that we all went to bed at the same time and slept in the same “room”. The only one who was a little out of sorts was Wrigley, our dog. You could tell she was confused by the fact that we were sleeping outside. The highlight for me was how easy it was for Max to put up the tent – only 1 step required having a 2nd adult to help. Now that we’ve had our dry run we’re ready to venture a little further out and try a real camping trip!

Father’s Day!

by Kate on 06-18-2009 09:18 AM

I asked Max what he wanted to do for Father’s Day and he said “the hike we never did on Mother’s Day”.   Great!  It’s a little bit of a drive but totally worth it.   There’s a rustic inn at the top of one of our local mountains that hosts a pancake breakfast once a month during the spring/summer months – and the views are amazing.  This time though,  I wanted a little insurance against the Sunday morning inertia that hit us last time so I called up another family and made official plans.  The girls have also been busy making crafts for him at school – there’s a “Dad you Rock” paper weight (which uses rocks), a portrait, and one other yet to be unveiled surprise at the Fathers Day Breakfast that Maddy’s room is hosting the Friday before.   Really cute to see them get excited about their projects.  What will you be doing to celebrate Father’s Day?

Last Day of School

by Kate on 06-10-2009 08:36 AM

Where did the school year go?  Gabby finishes up Kindergarten this week and I feel like we just got in our school groove!  I had one of those “I’m still a new mom and it surprised me” moments the other day, this time related to the last day of school.  I know my memory is a little fuzzy but I don’t remember festivities on the last day of school – yes we were all thrilled and excited but with few exceptions classes were still the same on the last day as they were earlier in the school year.   That appears to have changed somewhere in the last couple decades (I guess I shouldn’t be surprised) and now there’s some “class/administrative” activity but also a big celebration.  I heard from one co-worker that their school has a “Stepping Up” ceremony on that day to acknowledge that the kids are moving on to the next grade.  Gabby’s school hosts something they call “Field Days” which is a campus wide fair with games and activities that all the kids participate in.   I’m trying to think of something to do that we can make into a tradition to commemorate the day – I would love your ideas!

I want to extend a professional and personal thank you to all the customers who have contributed to our Prostate cancer fundraising campaign over the years.  This campaign has a special place in my heart as my dad died of prostate cancer two years ago (we miss you dad!). I want to help ensure, through supporting this campaign, that other friends, husbands, brothers, dads, and grandpas out there will live longer and better lives.   I was amazed to learn hat we have raised, thanks to you, nearly $42 million dollars in the eight years that we have been doing this – wow!  Those dollars go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research focused on discovering better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.

Safeway is running a promotion in June in honor of National Dairy month.  You can enter a sweepstakes for a trip for four to Denver, Colorado for a  “Rocky Mountain prehistoric adventure”, and, there is an instant win game where you can win a pair of tickets to the new Ice Age movie, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”.   Recipe booklets will be available in store and in addition to some creative recipes there are also a few coupons included.  One of the recipes that caught my eye was a “wings” version of classic bbq chicken provided by Dean’s.  Rather than marinate the chicken in traditional bbq sauce, use a buffalo wing sauce.  After you’ve grilled the chicken top with a spread made from french onion Dip, crumbled blue cheese, and sliced celery leaves.  Serve on a bun along with sliced tomatoes, onions, and lettuce – yum! I love wings and this looks like an easy way to get the flavor without all the work (my kind of recipe!).

Memorial Day

by Kate on 05-21-2009 08:30 AM

Does anyone else have Spring/Summer fever?  While our weather is still surprisingly a little “iffy” it has definitely shifted to more sunny/warm than not which makes me itchy to get outside!   Fortunately I have some vacation time coming.   My mom, sister and brother-in-law are coming into town Memorial Day weekend so we have a lot of activities planned - a minor league baseball game (cheaper than a movie now!), picking cherries at a local farm, a visit to one of the nearby amusement parks, and lots of grilling.   What are your plans for the long weekend?

The Dog Ate the Cake

by Kate on 05-14-2009 08:35 AM

The girls and I made a cake for Max’s birthday, and Maddy, who has a sweet tooth even bigger than mine, took every opportunity to swipe at it so there were a few finger marks on the side when we presented it to Max (if you look closely at the “before” photo you can see them). So I suppose it should not have been a surprise that the next morning, the day after our celebration, Max went into the kitchen and found the cake, semi-wrapped in plastic, halfway off the edge of the counter (instead of neatly wrapped up against the wall where it was the evening before), and the dog rapidly cleaning some fairly large crumbs off the floor. Maddy was with him and decided that Wrigley, our short, ten year old, arthritic dog, must have gotten into the cake, and they ran upstairs to tell me about it. Despite Maddy’s clean hands I knew she was the likely culprit and after a few questions we were able to get her to confess. Later that day we found a bathroom towel covered in cake and frosting which further confirmed that Wrigley was not to blame (I wish our dog was that neat!) and Maddy shared with us her motivation - she had dreamt about the cake, wanted some, so went downstairs to help herself. Life is so simple when you are 3!

My Ideal Mother’s Day

by Kate on 05-07-2009 02:31 PM

My ideal Mother’s Day is one where I’m not in the kitchen, there is no whining or fighting, and everyone listens, the first time. And, to be honest, while everyone will have the best of intentions this is just not going to happen unless I leave the house by myself and that doesn’t quite feel right on Mother’s Day, you know what I mean? My real Mother’s Day? A fun, outdoor activity that morning. There’s a rustic cabin/inn near the top of one of our local mountains which once a month, during the spring/summer months, hosts a pancake breakfast. It’s a little bit of a drive to get there but worth it! The hike is short and easy (although even with the slight incline we might end up carrying the twins) and the views are fabulous – the perfect setting to enjoy a picnic pancake breakfast – exercise, fresh air, and someone else makes breakfast – perfect! What plans do you have for Mother’s Day?

Max's Birthday Plans

by Kate on 04-29-2009 08:39 AM

Nothing major planned for Max’s birthday this year, we havea sitter for Saturday night so we can go out for dinner and see the new X-Men movie.  Max collected comic books as a kid and loves all those types of movies.  I love all the X-men films too; they are one of the few movies I can watch multiple times and not be bored.  Our family dinner celebration will be postponed until the Sunday following as I’m traveling the early part ofthe week and he’s going to be out of town the latter part of the week. Max’s request for our family dinner is shrimp, something we haven’t made in along time, worth a little splurge since it’s his birthday.   As we get closer we’ll decide if we want to grill them (I have a great marinade) or just eat them plain with cocktail sauce.   Yum, it’s making me hungry just thinking about it!

Earth Day

by Kate on 04-23-2009 09:37 AM

I first became aware of Earth Day when I moved to the West coast (19 years ago!) but I haven’t actively participated except for a handful of small events.  I was surprised to learn that it’s been an “official day” for 39 years!  As with many things, now that I’m a parent I’m looking to set up some sort of tradition with my girls to give meaning to this day.  I was happy to find some local volunteer projects which help the elderly or complete school improvements so I’m going to check them out to make sure it’s ok for the kids to participate as well.  Gabby’s school is putting on a “concert” with songs and skits which will be fun and given how green the school is I’m sure they’ll be many activities for the kids throughout the week.   What do you do to celebrate Earth Day?

Arbor Day

by Kate on 04-21-2009 08:55 AM

When I was growing up my elementary school commemoratedArbor Day by giving saplings to the fourth graders.   I’m sure we hadsome sort of ceremony/presentation as well but I don’t remember since it was solong ago!  What I do remember is that my Dad dutifully planted those treesand my sisters and I thought it was really cool to see how tall our trees grewover the years.  My parents have since moved, and sadly the house we grewup in was torn down a couple of years ago to build a new one but the trees arestill there!  Now that I’m a parent and see some of the impact climatechange has had on the world I can appreciate the importance of planting thosetrees.  Max and I are planning on doing some planting with our girls too!

National Stress Awareness Month

by Kate on 04-16-2009 08:43 AM - last edited on 04-16-2009 08:51 AM

April has been designated National Stress AwarenessMonth.  I took a moment to take a quiz on About.com – the “HealthyLifestyle Quiz – Is your lifestyle causing you undue stress?”  (http://stress.about.com/library/lifestylequiz/bl_lifestyle_quiz.htm)  Now, I didn’t need a quiz to tell me the answer would be YES! But I was hopingfor a nugget of insight that might help me reduce stress and went beyond what Ialready know – eat right, exercise frequently, and get enough sleep (easiersaid than done).  I wasn’t disappointed, after “acing” the first questionon exercise I didn’t do so well on the caffeine intake question.  I neverused to drink coffee, and then the kids were born and I found myself graduallygetting into the habit.  Now I have 2-3 cups every morning, and if forsome reason I’m unable to get to my coffee I find myself with a splittingheadache later that day.   This, according to the article imbedded inthe quiz, is an indication that I have a dependency (I didn’t like the sound ofthat).   And, upon reading further, I was surprised to see the numberof hormones that are impacted by caffeine.   Cortisol was the onethat really caught my attention – caffeine causes levels of this “stresshormone” to increase and it’s believed to lead to increased cravings for fat, carbohydrates, and cause the body to store fat in the abdomen – that’s notgood!  To be fair, caffeine has some benefits as well (it can speed upmetabolism, help keep sugar levels elevated so you don’t feel hungry, enhancephysical performance/endurance, and even help break down fat) but given mycurrent intake I think I’m going to try and cut back – I don’t need any “help”craving fat & carbohydrates!  What are some things you’ve donerecently to manage your stress?

Springtime Garden

by Kate on 04-14-2009 08:57 AM - last edited on 04-14-2009 08:58 AM

Maxand the girls have started digging holes in the backyard with the intent toplant a vegetable garden (likely a couple of tomato plants and an herb ortwo).    Max is the green thumb in our house and he has had somevery successful gardens in the past.  For some reason though his vegetableattempts have not been so successful in our “new” home.   This is our3rd spring/summer and this time he is determined to get a“crop”.  Last year he planted cherry tomatoes in pots with the girls (theylove watering them and picking the tomatoes when they’re ready), but we wereonly able to harvest a few and they did not taste that good.   This year he’s going to do some prep on the soil which will hopefully helpthings along.  I’m told this is a “test run” to see what works – I’mkeeping my fingers crossed for an abundant crop of home grown tomatoes! Are you doing a garden this year?
